Day 11 - Favorite outside soldier…
I adore Hotaru for reasons I’m not sure I can rationally explain. I like her character design, this may be biased due to purple being my favorite color, but I also enjoy the fact that her signature color IS purple as purple is associated with death in Japan. This is largely why villains are colored purple.
It may also be because at the time I learned about her, I had short black hair and my birthday is at the beginning of January. *coughcough*
I can’t say I have a solid reason for liking her more than the others, so I’ll just talk about why I like her in general. I think she is the most actively illustrated as having a very different personality from her previous life, and also tends to act differently while in Sailor form. Hotaru, despite her sadness and distant personality, is still a warm and loving character. This is evident in her expressions during the Death Busters, and later when she’s reincarnated as a very happy child. However, as Saturn she is very cold, formal, and has a strong sense of duty.
I think when Saturn first appears, her attitude is residual of her personality and behavior during the Silver Millennium. Not that she had much time to really develop since she died shortly after her birth, but it seemed very apparent in the comic and the cartoon that her personality was very different from Hotaru and that there was a distinction between Hotaru and Sailor Saturn. By Dream and Stars, Saturn is still a bit rigid, but shows traces of warmth characterized by Hotaru. This in mind, I think Hotaru shows a very clear split between civilian life and sailor duties, which most, if not all, the other girls lack. Most of the girls retain their civilian personalities as Sailors, the only one who doesn’t is Setsuna, and it’s arguable that her Sailor self IS who she truly is as only recently has be given the chance to a life free to duty.
I also like Hotaru’s inner strength and how it’s portrayed as being strong enough to obliterate evil. Let’s compare this to the rest of the girls. The only other character that has been able to overcome and outright defeat evil due to their own inner strength is Usagi. Let’s face it, Usagi’s whole power is centered around the depth of her love and determination being able to save the day, often at the cost of self sacrifice. Granted, Hotaru basically “dies,” sacrificing her body in order to destroy Mistress 9 and let Sailor Saturn take over, Usagi is usually able to remain alive or in control of her Sailor self. But to me this illustrates that Hotaru is not just strong because she has the power to obliterate worlds, but also strong in mind and soul.
I think perhaps she one of the few characters that fully understands what it means to sacrifice for the greater good. It sometimes bemuses me how Usagi and Chibi Usa scold Hotaru for accepting self sacrifice as a viable means when both, especially Usagi, routinely put their lives at risk of death in order to save the people they love. Usagi has actually killed herself numerous times to save the people she loves and knows she’ll die for it.
Comic examples: Killed herself with the sword, jumped into Pharaoh 90 with the Holy Grail, and sacrificed her Sailor Crystal to the Galaxy Cauldron.
Cartoon examples: Final battle versus Beryl, chasing after Saturn during the confrontation with Pharaoh 90, jumped off a building to save Chibi Usa, flew around a fully armed Sailor Galaxia naked.
Anyway, I like to think of Hotaru as being a pretty sound reflection of Usagi. A character that embodies love and ultimate power, but born to a life as an outcast instead of one that is universally loved. People are drawn to Usagi and people avoid Hotaru. Usagi’s powers are to bring rebirth and Hotaru’s to bring death. In many ways I feel they are part of the same coin.
Also, she wields a giant can opener. How can she not be awesome?

I against I
I-ya,
I against I,
Flesh of my flesh,
And mind of my mind,
Two of a kind but one won’t survive,
My images reflect in the enemies eye,
And his images reflect in in mine the same time…
